Bank declined your car loan? It may be policy — not bad credit
A bank no on a car loan often means the file didn’t fit that lender’s rules — vehicle age, deposit, employment type, documents, or loan size — while your credit conduct can still look fine.
We’ll need to assess your situation before anything goes ahead.
In short
Can I still finance a car after the bank said no?
Often yes if the no was policy — the car, the documents, or the employment type — and conduct still looks fine. Start with car loans. A work ute may sit under asset finance instead. Selective funding is only for some policy-fit files under about $30k.
Why banks decline car loans even with OK credit
Car-loan policies screen for more than repayment capacity. Common knock-backs: ABN age for self-employed applicants, vehicle age or kilometres, loan-to-value (deposit) limits, employment type, the documents the lender will accept, and min/max loan size.
When those rules fail but your repayment conduct still looks fine, that’s usually a policy decline — not automatically bad credit. See what a policy decline is.
Policy decline vs bad credit
| Policy decline | Bad credit / impaired credit | |
|---|---|---|
| What failed | Vehicle, docs, employment type, or product rules | Conduct — arrears, defaults, judgments, repeated dishonours |
| Jokuda | In scope when risk is OK | Out of scope — we do not fund bad credit |

What to do after a car-loan decline
- 1
Ask for the real reason
Policy, serviceability, security, and credit conduct point to different next steps.
- 2
Check your credit file for errors
Fix mistakes before you reapply.
- 3
Pause spray applications
Several similar declines in a short window can make the next assessment harder.
- 4
Confirm personal vs business use
Purpose has to be accurate so the right products and protections apply.
Consumer car loan vs business vehicle / chattel
A personal car is usually consumer credit under the National Credit Code, with responsible-lending obligations. A vehicle used mainly for genuine business purposes may sit under commercial structures such as a chattel mortgage — different disclosures and protections.
Purpose has to be accurate.

Broker panel rematch
We compare car and vehicle products across 50+ Australian lenders and only apply with your say-so. Useful when another policy fits better than the bank that said no.
Car loans overviewSelective funding
For some policy-fit files under about $30k, we may look at funding after assessment.
Policy-decline pillarDocuments that usually help a rematch
- Photo ID and proof of address
- Income evidence (payslips or trading statements / tax returns if self-employed)
- Recent bank statements
- Vehicle details (age, kilometres, purchase type — dealer or private sale)
- The decline reason from the bank if you have it in writing
Decline reason taxonomy
Car declines often sit in the asset row or the policy row. Don’t skip the conduct row if the letter names arrears or defaults.
| Type | What it usually means | Sensible next step |
|---|---|---|
| Policy / fit | Your file missed that lender’s rules — ABN age, docs, asset age, industry, or loan size — even if repayments look fine. | Get the reason in writing, then rematch. This is Jokuda’s lane when risk still looks OK. |
| Serviceability | They don’t think the repayment stacks up on the evidence they saw. | Don’t spray the same numbers. Fix income evidence or the amount before you apply again. |
| Security / asset | The car, equipment, or sale type sat outside their matrix. | Check age, kms, and private-sale rules. Another lender’s policy may still take it. |
| Credit conduct | Recent arrears, defaults, judgments, or repeated dishonours — impaired credit, not a policy box. | Out of scope for Jokuda. Fix the file (or get counselling) before any rematch talk. |
| Incomplete file | They couldn’t verify income, identity, or purpose from what you sent. | Gather the missing docs. Same thin pack usually gets the same no. |
One letter can mix more than one row. “Declined” on its own isn’t a diagnosis. Jokuda won’t treat a conduct decline as a policy-fit file.
How this shows up in Australia
Made-up sketches only — not case studies, and not a promise a similar file gets approved. No rates here. Anything we fund is priced after assessment.
Newcastle nurse — dealer car inside budget, casual hours
Bank’s car policy wants a longer stretch in the current employment type. Bureau file shows no default. Employment-policy mismatch. Rematch means a lender that scores that income pattern — not three more applications tonight.
Wollongong private sale — car older than the matrix
Private seller; car age past the bank’s limit. Deposit and conduct weren’t the stated problem. See whether another car-loan policy still accepts that vehicle. Work vehicle? Read the asset-finance page rather than forcing a personal-loan workaround.
Cairns buyer — letter cites recent arrears
If the decline names arrears, that’s conduct. We won’t rebadge it as a policy car loan. First 48 hours still apply — pause applications and deal with the listing — but Jokuda funding is out of scope.
