What is a policy decline?

It’s when a lender turns you down because your file doesn’t fit their written product rules — not always because of bad credit.

We’ll need to assess your situation before anything goes ahead.

In short

What is a policy decline?

The lender’s written rules didn’t fit the file — ABN age, docs, asset age, industry, or loan size. That isn’t automatically bad credit. Jokuda helps when the risk still looks OK. We’re not a bad-credit lender.

Plain-English definition

Lenders don’t only ask whether you can repay. They also ask whether the application fits their product rules — documentation type, ABN age, asset age, industry, income verification, employment type, and loan size bands. When the answer is no on rules, that’s a policy decline.

Examples of policy reasons

  • ABN or GST registration too recent for that product
  • Income documents the lender will not accept
  • Vehicle or equipment older than the lender’s matrix allows
  • Industry exclusion lists
  • Loan size below a minimum or above a specialist band
  • Employment or income type outside the scorecard

Policy decline vs bad credit vs serviceability

TypeWhat it means
Policy declineFile shape vs one lender’s written product rules
Bad credit / impairedConduct issues — arrears, defaults, judgments, repeated dishonours
ServiceabilityThe lender does not believe the repayment is sustainable on the evidence

What to do next

  1. 1

Get the decline reason in writing if you can

“Declined” alone isn’t enough to rematch well.

  2. 2

Check your credit file for errors

Fix bureau mistakes before the next application.

  3. 3

    Pause spray applications

Similar declines in a short window can harden the next assessment.

  4. 4

    Confirm purpose accurately

Personal vs genuine business use changes the product set.

  5. 5

    Rematch on purpose

Another policy, specialist tier, or ticket size may fit.

Decline reason taxonomy

Policy is one row. These are the others a letter might actually mean.

TypeWhat it usually meansSensible next step
Policy / fitYour file missed that lender’s rules — ABN age, docs, asset age, industry, or loan size — even if repayments look fine.Get the reason in writing, then rematch. This is Jokuda’s lane when risk still looks OK.
ServiceabilityThey don’t think the repayment stacks up on the evidence they saw.Don’t spray the same numbers. Fix income evidence or the amount before you apply again.
Security / assetThe car, equipment, or sale type sat outside their matrix.Check age, kms, and private-sale rules. Another lender’s policy may still take it.
Credit conductRecent arrears, defaults, judgments, or repeated dishonours — impaired credit, not a policy box.Out of scope for Jokuda. Fix the file (or get counselling) before any rematch talk.
Incomplete fileThey couldn’t verify income, identity, or purpose from what you sent.Gather the missing docs. Same thin pack usually gets the same no.

One letter can mix more than one row. “Declined” on its own isn’t a diagnosis. Jokuda won’t treat a conduct decline as a policy-fit file.

How this shows up in Australia

Made-up sketches only — not case studies, and not a promise a similar file gets approved. No rates here. Anything we fund is priced after assessment.

Canberra PAYG — employment type outside one scorecard

Contract role the bank’s policy doesn’t score; no default on the file they saw. That’s policy. Whether another lender scores contract income is an assessment — not a published rate.

Darwin business — GST registration too recent

Lender’s asset product wants longer GST history than the business has. Existing repayments are up to date. Read it as a trading-history rule. Selective funding under about $30k is only a conversation if cash flow supports the repayment.

Adelaide applicant — letter only says “declined”

Without a reason, don’t assume policy and don’t assume bad credit. Ask the lender, check the credit file, and use the decoder before a second application. Guessing the bucket is how people spray the wrong product.

Frequently asked questions

What does policy decline mean?+
The lender’s written product rules didn’t fit your file, even if your credit conduct may still be fine.
Is a policy decline permanent?+
No. Another lender’s policy or a different product may fit. Fix the mismatch — documents, purpose, asset, or how the file’s presented — before you reapply.
Is a policy decline the same as bad credit?+
No. Bad credit usually means recent arrears, defaults, judgments, or similar conduct. Policy declines are about product fit.
What should I do after a policy decline?+
Ask for the reason, check your credit file for errors, pause spray applications, confirm purpose, then rematch deliberately — often with a broker panel.
Can policy and serviceability both be true?+
Yes. A file can miss a product rule and also fail the repayment test. Fixing the label doesn’t make an unaffordable loan affordable. Unaffordable files are out of scope.
Where do I start in the first two days?+
Use the first 48 hours guide: save the notice, get the reason, and don’t lodge more applications the same day. The decline reason decoder helps read the wording.
