The first 48 hours after a bank says no
Don’t spray more applications. Get the reason, check the file, and work out whether this was policy fit — or something else.
We’ll need to assess your situation before anything goes ahead.
In short
What should I do before I apply again?
In the first two days, keep the decline notice, ask what failed, and stop new lender applications. A policy decline is a fit mismatch with one lender’s rules. It isn’t the same as bad credit, and it isn’t a cue to hunt “guaranteed approval”.
A practical order of work
- 1
Save the decline notice
Keep the email, letter, or app message. “Declined” alone isn’t enough.
- 2
Ask for the reason in writing
Policy, serviceability, the asset, documents, or credit conduct? Different problems.
- 3
Check your credit file for errors
Request your Australian credit report. Fix mistakes before anyone lodges again. A policy letter doesn’t prove the bureau file is clean.
- 4
Don’t lodge more applications the same day
Several similar enquiries in a short window can make the next assessment harder without fixing the mismatch.
- 5
Confirm the real purpose
Personal or household use is consumer credit. Genuine business use is assessed differently. Purpose has to be accurate.
- 6
Talk to a licensed broker before the next enquiry
Jokuda can say whether the file looks like a policy rematch, selective funding under about $30k, or something outside our lane. Nothing’s guaranteed until we’ve assessed.
Decline reason taxonomy
Use the written reason — if you can get one — to pick a row. Don’t guess from the word “declined”.
| Type | What it usually means | Sensible next step |
|---|---|---|
| Policy / fit | Your file missed that lender’s rules — ABN age, docs, asset age, industry, or loan size — even if repayments look fine. | Get the reason in writing, then rematch. This is Jokuda’s lane when risk still looks OK. |
| Serviceability | They don’t think the repayment stacks up on the evidence they saw. | Don’t spray the same numbers. Fix income evidence or the amount before you apply again. |
| Security / asset | The car, equipment, or sale type sat outside their matrix. | Check age, kms, and private-sale rules. Another lender’s policy may still take it. |
| Credit conduct | Recent arrears, defaults, judgments, or repeated dishonours — impaired credit, not a policy box. | Out of scope for Jokuda. Fix the file (or get counselling) before any rematch talk. |
| Incomplete file | They couldn’t verify income, identity, or purpose from what you sent. | Gather the missing docs. Same thin pack usually gets the same no. |
One letter can mix more than one row. “Declined” on its own isn’t a diagnosis. Jokuda won’t treat a conduct decline as a policy-fit file.
How this shows up in Australia
Made-up sketches only — not case studies, and not a promise a similar file gets approved. No rates here. Anything we fund is priced after assessment.
Brisbane sole trader — ute declined on ABN age
Plumber with clean repayment history; bank’s asset product needs a longer ABN. Policy row, not conduct. Next step: a lender with a different trading-history rule — or, if the amount is under about $30k and cash flow supports it, a selective-funding assessment. Neither is an approval.
Melbourne PAYG — private-sale car outside the age matrix
Bank’s car policy stops at a vehicle age or kilometre limit the private sale doesn’t meet. Conduct wasn’t the stated reason. Rematch means finding a policy that still accepts that car — not lodging the same deal at three more banks this afternoon.
Perth cafe — equipment quote under the bank minimum
Small piece of kitchen equipment; bank’s business product starts higher, or the industry sits on an exclusion list. Ticket size or industry policy. A personal-loan workaround that hides the business purpose isn’t something we’ll do.
